This holiday season is likely to be the worst for online shopping since it started a decade or so ago. But that doesn’t mean you won’t face delays or slowdowns at retail Web sites on Cyber Monday, or in the weeks ahead when online shopping intensifies.

There are free services available to help make Web shopping more efficient, and some of them, like retailers themselves, will be coming at you through your mobile phone or social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.

This holiday season, just say no to gift cards

Full Story At msnbc.com

For the first time since they became so popular, gift cards sales are expected to drop this year – anywhere from 6 to 9 percent. The tough economy is partly to blame; consumers need to trim their holiday spending.

But some shoppers plan to avoid gift cards so they don’t get stuck with worthless plastic, which can happen when a store goes out of business.

Bankruptcy Could Offer GM More Flexibility

General Motors insists that bankruptcy would be a catastrophic way to solve its cash problems, but that hasn’t stopped analysts and bankers from speculating about how a restructuring might shake out.

If Congress fails to bail out the auto giant, a prearranged bankruptcy deal might be the least onerous way to spread the pain among shareholders, bond holders, dealers and union members, analysts say. The federal government would probably still need to keep the company alive in a leaner form and reassure customers and creditors.

NEW YORK—A worker was killed in the crush Friday after a throng of shoppers eager for post-Thanksgiving bargains burst through the doors at a suburban Wal-Mart, authorities said.

At least four other people were injured, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island was closed.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a “tragic situation” and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.

“He was bum-rushed by 200 people,” co-worker Jimmy Overby, 43, told the Daily News. “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too. … I literally had to fight people off my back.”

CLAWSON — Gary Harrow was hit with a wave of nostalgia when he walked into Doc Sweets’ Candy Co.

“I haven’t seen a lot of the old stuff like candy cigarettes and long boys since I was a kid,” said Harrow of Dreyden, Mich., who made a U-turn when he and his wife, Sharon, saw the store on Rochester Road in Clawson. “This is a really great place. It kind of puts a smile on your face.”

Owner David Sklena is providing a sweet spot in today’s gloomy economy. His new Clawson business is believed to be the biggest candy store in the state. Inside, there’s something for everyone.

Mice and rats - and presumably humans - produce the chemical after eating a fatty meal. When researchers gave the rodents an extra dose, they ate less and shed weight, with no ill effects.

If similar tests in larger animals pan out, humans will be next, says Gerald Shulman, a molecular biologist at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut whose team discovered this new role for the molecule, called N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine (NAPE).

CHICAGO (WLS) — A Wilmette girl is celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday by giving to others who are less fortunate.

For third grader Nicole Basil of Wilmette, the Mahalia Jackson School on Chicago’s South Side is a long way from home. But bicycles have brought Wilmette and the Gresham neighborhood together. Nicole, her brother, Bennett, and her family started a used bike drive in October. The bikes would be for good students in needy neighborhoods.

“I’m bringing these bikes to you guys because you’re doing so well in school,” said Nicole.

Nicole and the Basil family brought 70 bikes to Jackson School. It’s a big deal now, but it started out small.
