Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act benefits everyone

Equal pay for equal work is good. But when everyone gets a cost of living increase in mim. wage and they forget about the people that have worked for raises , they do not get a cost of living raise. I used to make about $2.00 over mim. wage and worked very hard for it. But now I make 20 cents and the owners don’t care only that they make more money. and forget about the twelve years I put in doing a good job. All they can now think about in what labor cost. I am in the food industry and I know they have to make a profit, but quit working us with less people trying to do the same job. They will not give an inch. That is why I have been trying a lot of things just to get out of this job. There are maybe some people in the same place as I am, it would be nice if the employer thought of their employees. Hard times everyone is having them and then you have a lot of people only thinking of number one.

Who benefits if the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passes?

Congress may make history this week during debates in the Senate. The House passed both the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (HR 11) and the Paycheck Fairness Act (HR12) on Jan. 9, and the Senate voted to advance the Ledbetter bill (S. 181) by a vote of 72-23, with 18 Republicans voting yes.

What is it all about? It’s about the money that families have to spend in their households to make ends meet.

When a working woman, mom, wife, single mom, aunt or grandmother pulls out cash to buy a meal, tires for the car or pay the electric bill, they’d like to believe that their pay is the same as the guy doing the same job in the next cubicle.

And those women’s husbands, partners and friends would like to believe the same thing.

I once wrote a column about fair pay for women and was gratified by the many men who wrote in that they wanted the women in their lives to make equal pay – because it’s good for the whole family.
