Computer fans in China, one of Apple’s fastest growing markets, seemed particularly moved.

(CNN) — Steve Jobs, the visionary in the black turtleneck who co-founded Apple in a Silicon Valley garage, built it into the world’s leading tech company and led a mobile-computing revolution with wildly popular devices such as the iPhone, died Wednesday. He was 56.

The hard-driving executive pioneered the concept of the personal computer and of navigating them by clicking onscreen images with a mouse. In more recent years, he introduced the iPod portable music player, the iPhone and the iPad tablet — all of which changed how we consume content in the digital age.

(MONEY Magazine) — You don’t have to invest thousands in high-tech insulation or a super-efficient furnace to cut home heating costs. Just sealing drafts could lower your bills 3% to 18%, according to Danny Parker, a research scientist who works with the Department of Energy.

In the high-heating-cost Northeast, that translates to annual savings of as much as $250 if you burn natural gas or $550 for oil. Pretty good for low-cost projects you can do yourself.

LONDON — The group known as Anonymous said Saturday it has hacked into some 70 law enforcement websites across the southern and central United States in retaliation for arrests of its sympathizers in the U.S. and Britain.

The hacking group also claimed to have stolen 10 gigabytes of data, including emails, credit card details, and other information from local law enforcement bodies.

“We are releasing a massive amount of confidential information that is sure to (embarrass), discredit and incriminate police officers across the US,” the group said in a statement, adding that it hoped the leak would “demonstrate the inherently corrupt nature of law enforcement using their own words” and “disrupt and sabotage their ability to communicate and terrorize communities.”

Confirming years of warnings from government and private security experts, a top Homeland Security official has acknowledged that computer hardware and software is already being imported to the United States preloaded with spyware and security-sabotaging components.

The remarks by Greg Schaffer, the Department of Homeland Security’s acting deputy undersecretary for national protection and programs, came Thursday during a tense exchange at a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The panel is considering an Obama administration proposal to tighten monitoring and controls on computer equipment imported for critical government and communications infrastructure.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A Massachusetts biotechnology company says it can produce the fuel that runs Jaguars and jet engines using the same ingredients that make grass grow.

Joule Unlimited has invented a genetically-engineered organism that it says simply secretes diesel fuel or ethanol wherever it finds sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based company says it can manipulate the organism to produce the renewable fuels on demand at unprecedented rates, and can do it in facilities large and small at costs comparable to the cheapest fossil fuels.

HANOI — Vietnam has chosen to partner with Japan in the construction of a nuclear power plant and in mining rare earth minerals in the southeast Asian country, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan told reporters on Sunday.

“I understand that becoming partners in these two issues means that the two countries are maintaining close ties in the long term and it symbolizes the beginning of our true partnership,” he said.

Developing and operating nuclear power plants abroad could help growth in Japan, the world’s third-biggest nuclear power generator after the United States and France, as its electricity demand is expected to stay flat or rise slightly at best because of its aging society and industries shifting abroad.

(CNN) — A pair of pilots flew the world’s first manned commercial spacecraft over California’s Mojave Desert on Sunday, though they were the only ones aboard.

The mission was a test flight for Richard Branson’s dream of affordable space travel and put his vision a step closer to reality, he said after watching the spaceship land.

“Now, the sky is no longer the limit, and we will begin the process of pushing beyond to the final frontier of space itself over the next year,” Branson said, according to a statement released by his company, Virgin Galactic, which is behind the project.
